ASB Skills & Competencies

ASB Training providers develop courses which build on the asb skills and competencies required when working in the field of anti social behaviour.

When we are dealing with anti social behaviour there are certain core skills that are essential such as listening, observing, analysing and problem solving. We also have to be able to investigate objectively and have a keen understanding of the dynamics of social relationships. We have to be able to support and instill confidence in victims and witnesses and we have to interview perpetrators with integrity. We have to ensure that we are not professionally compromised, that we follow procedures and we have to make a difference.

In order to be able to do this we have to develop practical knowledge and experience, good partnership skills and very good time management. Ask for training if you highlight this in staff appraisals, be proactive about researching legislation and use statutory guidance to your advantage. Find out how your partner agencies can tackle asb with their own tools and powers because knowledge is power. Keep your eye out for good practice and use it to your advantage to fit around your own community issues.

In this line of work it is easy to fall into the trap of getting too involved, getting frustrated with partner agencies and not keeping up with case files because you are so easily distracted by the needs of your clients or a new case has come in that needs urgent attention.It is a big responsibility when you have the protection of frightened and vulnerable victims to consider before you clock off. It can be a thankless task trying to change behaviour, trying to manage expectations and trying to make a difference but it can also be the most rewarding and fulfilling work that you ever do because it matters.

Be confident in your abilities, be pro active in your working practices but look after your own well being too because you are worth it.
